About Me

Prior to coming to ASU I went to school at a community college called Pierce College. As I attended Pierce College, I had two jobs. My first job was in the afternoon where I coached children in after school sports. The sports that I coached were basketball, football, volleyball, and track and field. Coaching kids was probably one of my favorite jobs. It feels good working with the youth and helping develop young kids into young adults through means of sports. My second job was working in a warehouse where I usually worked crazy hours in the morning. This job allowed me to work in the morning, go to school from 10 to 3, coach kids in the afternoon, and go to school again at night. Even though this schedule was a little busy for me I loved it. I’m the kind of person that enjoys staying busy and would rather be on the go rather than sitting down for too long and not doing anything.

On my free time I enjoy working out, hanging out with friends, going to the movies, trying new food, watching sports, and reading. However, I am pretty picky on what I read outside of school. Overall I would say I’m pretty easy going person that loves to watch ASU sports.

Free Write: ASU and Allstate

The other day at work one of my supervisors came up to me and asked me how to get more involved at ASU and what they have to do in order to be more recognized. Allstate wants to give ASU students the opportunity to have more people come and intern with them. However, it is hard to spread the word about a new internship program. So, when one of my supervisors asked me how and what Allstate can do to be more involved I told them about special career fairs that ASU holds in order to get companies internship programs more recognized. Also, I set an appointment with people from the career service center in order to have career services share with Allstate how we can be better noticed. After meeting with the career service counselors, Allstate is going to try to be more active and involved in different career fairs and get their internship program set up on the career service page.

I hope that Allstate can become a company that helps college students receive jobs once graduated. I know that the supervisors are willing to help students receive jobs once they go through the internship program and Allstate understands how hard it is for a college student to get a job so quickly after graduation. In the long run, my plan is to have Allstate exposed to ASU and allow them to create a partnership with ASU in order to create a great program for students in the future.

"Typical Day"

For the internship program my typical day varies from one way to another. Depending on what department I am in I can either be doing cost management in the morning in the auto department or I can be doing what we commonly refer to as the “5080” emails in the property department. If I am in the auto department I start off my day working with checks and vendors, I verify that the checks are complete and issue them out; however, if the bill does not line up with the information that we have on the claim we must contact the vendor in order to discuss which person has the correct estimate. If I am working in property, I do a lot of gathering information through what we call the “5080 emails.” The information that I can gather in these claims vary and usually revolve around estimates, additional living expenses, photos regarding the claim (some photos can be pretty interesting) and any legal documentation that can regard the claim. Sometime between working those claims, I usually ask my supervisor at the time if they have any special projects that they would like me to work on. The special projects can vary from something like contacting an individual or it can be adding up the additional cost of living expenses. Overall though, there is really no “typical” day at Allstate, but every day is a new adventure and something to learn from.

About Allstate and the Internship

I am currently working at Allstate which is the second largest insurance company in the United States. Something that people do not usually know is that Allstate really started in 1925 and was a product within Sears. Allstate didn’t actually become an official insurance agency until the 1950s and now the company is ranked as 93 among Fortune 100. Prior to accepting the internship I really had no idea how the insurance business ran and wanted to do the internship program because I believed that it was a good way of providing a necessary service to the public. When I entered the internship program though I had no idea exactly what I was going to do for them and how much I was going to learn.
First day I enter the internship program, Allstate already had a plan on how I was going to spend my time and what I was going to be doing. The first week I was able to do work with support, which is how all the mail and all the information got delivered to everyone. After I worked support for a day, Allstate had me shadowing every person that was in every department for about a week. After that week was complete I worked in autos “Good Hands Repair Network,” which focuses on cost management and works directly with vendors. Next, I worked in casualty where I gathered information among represented and unrepresented individuals’ to gather data that pertained to the claim. Finally, I worked in property where I was able to excel and learn a lot from. In property, I focused on customer service and satisfaction. I worked directly with the customer and had an opportunity to be exposed to a lot of different types of claims. As of now, I am still interning with Allstate and I am currently switching between property and auto departments.
Overall, the Allstate internship has become more than anyone can ask for in an internship program. The program got me exposed and familiar with every department and had me work every single department. Allstate is definitely a program that I would do my internship under.
